Perfect Sailing in Doubtless Bay
If you are lucky enough to be in Doubtless Bay on a Wednesday night in summer you can always catch a sail in a yacht race. Just turn up at the Mangonui Cruising Club at Mill Bay Jetty at 5pm and ask who needs some crew. You will always find a keen yachtie who will take you out for a spin in one of the fleet of 15 or so boats that sail regularly each week .
In winter the racing starts on a Sunday at 11am. Again just arrive at the jetty about 10.30 and ask if anyone needs crew. There are also lots of cup races – such as racing to Whangaroa and back – that are held at different times in the weekend usually.
Sailing in Doubtless Bay is relatively hazard free – it is a big horseshoe shaped bay. A course is set rounding the buoys set by the club and can be quite exciting, especially at the start line!
So if you are after a taste of yacht racing, this could be a good option for you. Or else you could always sit on the deck at Golden Sand Beachfront Apartments and have a ringside view of the racing as the course usually goes right past the apartments.
