Wine and Food Markets in the Far North
Don’t miss the Far North Wine Centre in Mangonui for a full selection of Far North Wines including Karikari Estate and Okahu Estate wines. Here you can sample a range of wines and make your selections. I especially like the Waitapu syrah, grown by local celebrities Eric and Sandra Shackleton. Then it is a short walk to the BYO restaurant Waterfront Cafe with the great views of Mangonui Harbour.
On Saturday mornings it is a great idea to visit the markets in Kaitaia ( in the Warehouse carpark on SH1) Here you will find fresh ( and cheap!) local produce in abundance. I got some mandarins and organic garlic and loads of greens this week which is a big help with the school holidays. You can even get fish and oysters the easy way here! Also loads of plants at bargain prices and brickabrac stalls. Really worth the trip!

Golden Sand Beachfront Apartments has gained a Qualmark Enviro Silver Award, recognising its high standards in environmental practices.
To earn New Zealand tourism’s official environmental award, Golden Sand Beachfront Apartments had to show effectiveness in energy efficiency, waste management and water conservation, with community activities and conservation initiatives also considered under Qualmark’s environmental criteria.
Owners Brian and Rosemary Archibald, say they are proud to be awarded this recognition of their “green” initiatives.
“It is great to be part of the emerging environmentally conscious tourism industry in Doubtless Bay,” says Rosemary.
All businesses carrying the Qualmark logo must meet standards for environmental practices, says Qualmark Chairman, David Wilks, with the awards recognising top performers in this area.
“Environmental practices are evaluated as part of our quality assessment process and Enviro Awards are granted to businesses showing a high degree of commitment to caring for the environment and their community,” says Mr Wilks.
Over 470 businesses have achieved Enviro Award status - recognising their commitment to Qualmark’s responsible tourism criteria and environmental practices.
Qualmark® is New Zealand’s trusted guide to quality travel experiences - helping travellers identify over 2,300 great places to stay, things to do and ways to get around.

Golden Sand Beachfront Apartments at Cable Bay has been recognised as one of the country’s leading accommodation businesses by Qualmark - New Zealand Tourism’s official quality assurance system.
To earn the prestigious quality mark, Golden Sand underwent a comprehensive on-site assessment which measured performance against over 400 quality criteria.
As a result of the assessment, Golden Sand was awarded a four star grade in the Holiday Home category.
Owner(s) Rosemary Archibald, says ” being 4 star with Qualmark means travellers can be guaranteed an excellent standard of accommodation experience”.
“We are pleased to be offering a slice of kiwiana and a genuine Kiwi bach experience,” says Rosemary
Assessment criteria are developed with the tourism industry and based on research into what travellers expect in areas such as customer service, facilities, cleanliness, safety and other business operations.
Our official tourism quality mark is only earned through independent assessment, so travellers can be assured they meet the standards, says Qualmark Board Chair, David Wilks.
“Qualmark puts the brand of New Zealand, the silver fern, behind quality businesses, so travellers can count on an experience that measures up to their expectations, “says Mr Wilks.
The Qualmark star grading system sits alongside the Qualmark endorsement system for tourism businesses such as adventure activities, transport, attractions and nature experiences.
