If you are lucky enough to be able to visit the Far North with its sunny weather, then you will know about all the stunning beaches. This is a list of a few things you can do…
- Here you can have hours of fun playing in the water, gathering shellfish on Tokerau Beach, as well as fishing off the wharves or kayaking or paddle boarding – even surf beaches such as Taipa and Cable Bay.
- Have a horse back ride, drive a 4WD down 90 Mile Beach, ( you can rent from Northland Rentals for the day) or even hire a Blo- kart.
- Visit the authentic kauri gum-digging site (Gumdiggers Park) which has remained untouched since gum holes were dug almost 100 years ago. Learn about the biggest industrial booms of NZ’s past.
-
Sample fish and chips at Mangonui’s Famous Fish Shop or lick a huge ice cream from Cable Bay Store.
- Walk the Mangonui Heritage Trail with many interesting sites – see if you can find the negro’s grave! Have a tipple at Mangonui Hotel or a refreshing drink at the Waterfront Cafe – all the while watching the tide and the boats.
- Of course there is fishing for all skill and experience levels. From fishing off the wharves to throwing a line off the rocks or even chartering a boat for a morning to go our on the briney.
- Relax with a glass of local wine and view the myriad of stars above in the clear skies
- Take a bush walk at Rangikapiti Pa or walk from Taipa to Reids Beach – best at low tide to go around the rocks
- Go for a Wednesday evening sail at Mangonui Mill Bay Wharf
- Sample local produce and art and crafts at the Tuesday evening market in Mangonui or the Saturday markets at The church opposite the fire station (excellent chili tomato sauce Liz) or the Mangonui Hall with everything from bread boards to olive oil and earrings! All in all you can have a relaxing break in Doubtless Bay or get active – but you will be sure to want to return!
