Land Activities

There are many land-based activities in this area.

You go for a walk, fly a kite, have ice cream, shop for arts and crafts and so much more. check out our tried and true suggestions Walks in the area  

  • Walk any of a number of different and beautiful beaches in the area - Cable Bay at your doorstep or Coopers beach nearby, the Heritage trail in Mangonui. Other beaches nearby are Rangiputa, Puwheke and Maitai Bay
  • Taumarumaru Reserve at Coopers Beach has a couple of pas to climb and stunning views of  Doubtless Bay and a great place to walk the dog
  • Rangikapiti Pa - with ample parking and great views out to sea and photo opportunity at the trig station.

 

Museums in the area  
  • The Whalers Museum at Butler Point is a fascinating look at the history of the area as a whaling station. Wonderful expansive gardens for a picnic or stroll. By appointment only.
  • The Tractor Museum at Aurere for vintage cars and farm equipment and fun activities for the kids. Open most days.

 

Vineyards to visit  
  • Dancing Petrel does wine tasting and sales at Paewhenua Island a short distance from Mangonui.
  • Okahu Estate - on the road to Ahipara, has award-winning wines to taste

 

Heritage Trail Mangonui 

Pop into the Information Centre in Mangonui for a map and check out the historic places in Mangonui and Mill Bay. This 3 kilometre walk gives you a glimpse of Mangonui of yesteryear and takes about one and a half hour. Finish with a tipple at the local to really get the olden day feeling!

 

Taumarumaru Reserve

Enjoy a walk over the two pa sites at Coopers Beach ( the entry is opposite the Coopers Beach bowling club)  the and see this beautiful secluded beach! Great place to walk the dog also. You can also walk the length of Coopers Beach, with its pohutukawa swings and safe swimming
